ABOUT 

Sylvia Obell is an entertainment journalist whose relatable and entertaining approach to news has made her a valued rising voice in culture. She is the host of Hella Opinions, an unapologetically black Twitter show she helped develop at BuzzFeed News, and a producer/correspondent for the news site’s flagship show AM to DM. Her reporting career includes viral culture takes like “How Blac Chyna Beat The Kardashians at Their Own Game” and interviews with the likes of Ava DuVernay, Gabrielle Union, Shonda Rhimes, and Lizzo. In addition, she has provided on-camera commentary and hosted live conversations for major brands like BET, CBS News, BBC, Netflix, H&M, and Universal Pictures. She is an alum of North Carolina A&T State University and Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism who lives in Brooklyn, New York.

She’s currently the co-host of The Scottie & Sylvia Show, a podcast in partnership with Issa Rae’s Raedio audio company. Her past hosting work includes the Okay, Now Listen podcast and Get You A Me — both collaborations with Netflix's Strong Black Lead — and Hella Opinions, an unapologetically black Twitter show she helped develop at BuzzFeed News. Sylvia is also a celebrated writer whose work has appeared in publications such as New York Magazine, Elle, Cosmopolitan, and Essence where she penned profiles on impactful black women such as Zendaya, Issa Rae, Venus & Serena Williams, Lizzo, Savannah James, and SZA. Her reporting career includes on-air interviews with the likes of Gabrielle Union, Quinta Brunson, Daniel Kaluuya, Lakeith Stanfield and many Bravo Real Housewives. In addition, she has provided on-camera commentary and hosted live conversations for major networks like ABC, BET, CBS News, BBC, Universal Pictures, and Bravo. She is an alum of North Carolina A&T State University and Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism who lives in Los Angeles, CA.
